“I’m taking time to focus on my family and career in the years ahead,” Unis said of his decision by email this morning. “I’m incredibly grateful for the support of the Verona Community these past 7 years.” Day joined the BOE after the November 2013 election, in which he bested incumbent Glenn Elliott and was the highest vote-getter.
If you think that you might want to run for Unis’ old seat or to challenge Day, you must file a nominating petition with the county clerk by 4 p.m. on Monday, July 25.
Prospective candidates should start by reading the New Jersey School Board Association’s Candidate Kit. It includes a nominating petition, information about legal qualifications for school board candidacy and the role of the school board member. Information about the New Jersey School Ethics Act and important dates in the school election process are also included in the kit. A full term on the school board runs for three years.
Once it is complete, your nominating petition gets turned in to the Essex County Clerk’s Election Division in the Hall of Records at 465 Martin Luther King Blvd., Room 246, in Newark. Its hours are Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
